Fashionable Follower: Nana Afriyie Duncan Bentsi-Enchill

I must say that I have never seen this woman in an outfit I didn't want to rip off of her and wear myself and she was on African prints before they became the thang.

Name:
Nana Afriyie Bentsi-Enchill
Profession: Distribution Analyst
Organization/Company/School: Time Inc.

What are you wearing now?
A white button down shirt tucked into a navy blue and white navy stripped balloon skirt with an elastic waist band which makes it comfortable (I love the angles in this skirt – it’s been stitched in such intricate ways to give it an angular flair love it!), a black belt, bone or dove colored patent leather pumps, a bluish-grey pashmina around my neck (I love the color against the white shirt)

What’s your favorite fashion combination?
Skinny jeans, a colorful shirt or white tank with a cute jacket (especially my favorite army/navy inspired jacket – it combines two new fashion trends – the army look and the navy look – my favorite is the extended padded shoulders)
I also love to pair that look with my long black boyfriend blazer.
My new favorite look for summer is a cute tank with a high-waist mini skirt, or fitted spandex dress; I can throw on my boyfriend blazer and pumps and switch it up for an evening with girlfriends or dinner with hubby.
How would you describe your current fashion sense?
Feminine – what can I say I love being a girl but not girly- just feminine!
Versatile - I love unique pieces, but being on a budget means the clothes I buy have to work for different looks. Sunday brunch as well as date night. SO my blazers, jackets, pants, skirts or shirts that I buy are never too trendy. I like a hint of trend and a hint of high fashion but not all out. This way if I wear it to church on Sunday I don’t look over dressed and if I wear to the club I don’t look under dressed. I love to use accessories to change my look around, a scarf, big earrings, a ring, or funky hair accessories. I love a hint of flair and sometimes big details! My favorite dress is one I wore to a wedding – a royal blue one strap dress, very simple up top but big rosette ruffles on the bottom!

Functional - I love dresses and skirts with pockets. Good fabrics that move with your body and accentuate your good parts ;). Comfortable fit - not too tight not too loose, I need to be able to walk in it and run in it if the boogey man’s coming after me lol.
When I go shopping I stick with my 3 f’s and a v.

1. Functionality

2. Fun

3. Fit and Versatility

What/Who inspires your style?
It started with my mother – she never walks out of the house until her look is perfected (my husband will testify that I’m the EXACT same way – that is why my mom and I are always late). My mother’s jewelry collection is flawless and even as a child I’d sit in her room and put on all her sets! Pearls, big gold necklaces you name it she had it! Every time you went out with her she received compliments, everyone wanted her look- whether it was church or the market, she looked flawless and she walked with this air about her. Looking good is feeling good and my mother always felt good when she stepped out. When I pick out my clothes to go out I think back to my first stylist (my mother) what would she say if I bumped into her on the street. These days – I’m trying to be like her; grown and sexy – so my perfect wardrobe would be packed with pieces from Michelle Obama, Sara Jessica Parker and Kerry Washington’s closets. I think in terms of designers Rachel Roy is the one that captures my sense of fashion best she combines the three things I look for in an outfit very well

1. Versatility

2.Clean lines/Functionality

3. A little bit of flair/lots of color/fun. Her clothes are wearable and versatile – they can take you from work to evening comfortably and they’re not overly trendy.

What item (make-up, clothing, etc.) would you die without?
1. My jackets! I always complete my looks with a jacket – I feel naked without them.

2. my nail polish collection -as much as I want a completely different outfit everyday and would like to change up my style all the time – I can’t always do that – having freshly polished nails allows me to play with color in a way that I can’t always with my clothes. The first thing I change with the seasons is my nail polish, bright colors in the summer, orange, brown, gray, red hues in the fall, light pastel in the spring and darker colors in the winter. Painting my nails is an easy, cheap way to freshen up my look all the time!

3. Make up is also another way to always look fresh! I HEART makeup.
Does your professional style and casual fashion style differ? How?
Yes! I work in a very corporate environment so, as much as I want to be playful with my clothes I can’t always do that at work – so a lot of the pieces I buy must be able to take me from the boardroom to the street. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not wearing suits to work but I try to keep my work clothes appropriate for work. I always stay true to myself so my work clothes are still young and fun but still appropriate for the work place. Pencil skirts, button down shirts, dress pants etc. I tend to be more playful with my look outside of work – brighter colors, bigger jewelry, bigger hair, shorter skirts lol – more of that flair when I’m not working.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my husband and catching up with friends especially my girlfriends. I also love to read – I just finished “Game Change” which is a book about the 2008 elections – fascinating! This summer I’m going to learn how to roller blade with my husband and go to the (cheap/free lol) theater a WHOLE LOT more. I love drama! lol

What is your life motto? Favorite quote?
Love people and be fabulous doing it! When I leave this world there are three things I want to be said about me and I want them to be true versus people just saying nice things –
1. That I was a great wife and mom

2. That I was a true friend

3. That I touched the lives of many young women. I want to use every strength that I’ve been given. That is why my favorite quote is one Nelson Mandela quoted in a speech – it was originally written by Marianne Williamson,

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is
that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God.”

How would you describe your personality?
Fun, honest, fiercely loyal and spontaneous and passionate!

If you could be anywhere with anyone wearing anything – what would they be?

I’d be in Ghana with my husband wearing something I created! And then I’d ask Rachel Roy to meet me in Greece with one of her best pieces just for me!
