Where in the world has complexity and authenticity gone?
Mike and I literally sat at the park all day and talked constantly about one subject, one question, with many answers – where has authenticity and complexity gone?
Background: This conversation arose, while I was reading an article; however although the article sparked the conversation, this is a subject that I have been thinking about constantly in the last five months (another story). Back to the story, in the four page article, this guy was talking about his “classy” lifestyle…and after reading the first page I looked at Mike and said:
I can finish this article – let me guess, he has a beautiful car, he vacations in tropical places, possibly skis, love’s wines and fancy restaurants...
Mike: Yeah, how did you know that?
Because, isn’t that what success looks like these days. You have to fit in a box – if you’ve reached success – you must love wine, go fancy places, enjoy fashion” blah blah blah – “just like if you’re artsy you wear big glasses, enjoy coffee shops,” blah blah blah “It’s like complexity is gone – either you are one way or the other.
That’s true. It’s hard --
It’s like, the push to conform and be one certain way is one of the major reasons for depression, low self-esteem and misery in the world, because you are striving to be one way, even if it’s NOT AUTHENTICALLY you, and every time you fail to be that person, you become down on yourself – it’s hard to keep up.
The real you is far more interesting than a fake someone else,
That’s deep
I think Lauren Hill said that but even when you think of someone’s path to success; so many people think that there is only one way to become successful – but look at Jay Z – he went from streets, entertainer, no college or high school degree, to a legit businessman, just like the CEO of any other corporations. It’s about carving your own path, enjoying life - based on your own authenticity.
Right…it’s like what happens to the successful person, that enjoys relaxing around the park in sweats, drinking icies, eating candy, laughing while playing old school video games, collects cds and enjoys quiet weekend nights? Where are those people – like when do we hear about or see the successful business woman, that rides a motorcycle, volunteers as a dance teacher for inner-city girls, enjoys baking, sports, and America’s Next Top Model? Do we not hear about those people or do people completely let those aspects of their lives disappear in order to seem “normal” or fit into some weird standard?
People just need to do things that you enjoy and be confident in what you bring to the table – like if you like fashion, art and wine – love them but love them for you not other’s approval…
True THAT…let's break the MOLD...cause mold stinks...hahahahha...no pun intended...
Silence and blank stare
