On Thursday, the results of the Gallup Healthways Well-being Index were released, giving insight into what states are the happiest – and which states are the saddest.

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a state perhaps best known for sun and surf snagged the top spot on the list (think: volcanoes and leis), but there are some upsets in the mix (are New Yorkers REALLY happier than people from Indiana?).

The index evaluates areas such as healthy behavior and work environment, among others, in ranking wellbeing among the states, and according to the report, “1000 adults, seven days a week” were spoken to in telephone interviews.

Gallup points out that states from the West, Midwest and New England held many of the top spots, while the South took many of the spots at the low end of the scale.
Take a look at the slideshow above to find out where your state ranks.
