"The hair follicles contain two types of melanin pigment: a darker, brown-black pigment called eumlanin, and a lighter, reddish pigment called pheomelanin. Brunettes have much more eumelanin, while redheads have more pheomelanin. Blondes have small amounts of both pigments. Gray hair has only a small amount of pigment, and white hair has none at all."
